Strategies of vowel reduction - a speaker-dependent phenomenon

چکیده

In natural speech, a lot of interand intra-subject variation in the realisation of vowels is found. Perception experiments show that listeners can discriminate speaker-independent levels of vowel reduction. The question is whether all speakers used the same acoustic cues for signalling reduction levels. The acoustic realisation of reduction levels of the vowels [u:], [i:], and [a:] of three speakers were tested for their separability and their predictability using linear discriminant analysis, support vector machines, and artificial neural networks. The results indicate a speaker-dependent realisation of vowel reduction.

Acoustic and articulatory manifestations of vowel reduction in German

Recent phonological approaches incorporate phonetic principles in the motivation of phonological regularities, e.g. vowel reduction and neutralization in unstressed position by target undershoot. So far, evidence for this hypothesis is based on impressionistic and acoustic data but not on articulatory data. The major goal of this study is to compare formant spaces and lingual positions during t...

Assimilation of Final Low Back Vowel in Eghlidian Dialect

In this article, the low back vowel /A/ in word-final positions in Eghlidian dialect, one of Persian dialects, is studied. This vowel is represented phonetically as [A], [o] and [@] in different phonetic environments. Therefore many words were collected via interviewing ten native speakers so that these different alternant forms can be accounted for appropriately. Since one of the authors of th...

Signal dynamics in the production and perception of vowels

In " Approaches to Phonological Complexity ". 1. Abstract Vowels can be produced with static articulatory configurations represented by dots in acoustic space (generally by formant frequencies in the F1-F2 plane). But because vowel characteristics vary with speaker, consonantal environment (co-articulation) and production rate (reduction phenomenon), vowel formant frequencies can also be repres...

Speaker normalization of stressed and unstressed vowels in articulatory and formant spaces

One of the goals of phonetic investigations is to find strategies for vowel production independent of speaker-specific vocal-tract anatomies and individual biomechanic properties. In this paper we apply a technique for speaker normalization to formant spaces, lingual vowel target positions and palate midlines. The general goal is to extract speaker-independent strategies for stress production i...

Dynamic and task-dependent encoding of speech and voice by phase reorganization of cortical oscillations.

Speech and vocal sounds are at the core of human communication. Cortical processing of these sounds critically depends on behavioral demands. However, the neurocomputational mechanisms enabling this adaptive processing remain elusive. Here we examine the task-dependent reorganization of electroencephalographic responses to natural speech sounds (vowels /a/, /i/, /u/) spoken by three speakers (t...
